Add a Website to Google Search Console: Step by Step Guide

Google Search Console is a must-have tool for all site owners as it gives you a vast amount of information about how your site is doing in search. 

In this tutorial, I explain how to create a Google Search Console account, how to connect Google Search Console to Yoast SEO plugin, and how to submit your website XML sitemap to Google Search Console.

The tutorial consists of three sections:

  1. Creating Google Search Console account.
  2. Connecting Google Search Console to Yoast SEO plugin.
  3. Submitting XML sitemap to Google Search Console.

Section 1:  Creating a Google Search Console account

1. Go to Google Search Console Website, and click Start now.

2. Enter your domain name, then click Continue.

3. Copy the TXT Record by clicking the Copy button.

4. Go to your DNS Settings, and create a TXT Record; set the record type to TXT – Text and paste the TXT Record into the value field.

5. Start the domain ownership verification process by clicking Verify.

6. After the domain ownership is verified, click Go to property.

Section 2:  Connecting Google Search Console to Yoast SEO plugin

1. Go to your WordPress website dashboard, hover over SEO then click Search Console.

2. Allow Yoast SEO to fetch your Google Search Console information by clicking Get Google Authorization Code.

3. Allow Yoast SEO to access your Google account by clicking Allow.

4. Copy the Google authorization code by clicking the copy button.

5. Paste Google authorization code in the textbox, then click Authenticate.


6. Select your Google Search Console profile, then click Save Profile.

Section 3: Submitting XML sitemap to Google Search Console

1.  Check the XML sitemap index; On Yoast SEO General Settings page, scroll down till you find XML Sitemaps, click on the Question Mark, then click on See the XML sitemap.

2. Copy the URL of the sitemap index.

3. Submit your sitemap index to Google Search Console by clicking on Sitemaps, then pasting the sitemap index URL, and clicking Submit.

4. Check the submitted sitemap status.

Congratulations! You have created a Google Search Console account and submitted your website XML sitemap successfully.
